About Me

Hello, my name is Evelyn. I was born and raised in Brooklyn.  I came from a single-parent household. My mother provided as best she could for three children. I was the oldest, so I had to set a positive example for my younger siblings. As a child, I always had positive role models around me who emphasized education. I was the first in my household to graduate from high school.

After high school, I started my freshman year at New York City College of Technology. Freshman year at City Tech I got married and became pregnant with my first child. I had to take a break from school.  I went back to school but became pregnant with my second child. It doesn’t matter how many times you put your life on pause the most important thing is that you finish what you start. I graduated from City tech with my associates in Human Services. I knew from a young age I wanted to be in a profession that will give me the skills to help people.

I’m not going to say it was easy, it wasn’t I had a family and a full-time job. I wanted to accomplish my goal of getting a college education. I knew early on that to be successful you had to have the education and work hard. Once my youngest child was in elementary school, I told myself this is your time to finish what you started. I enrolled in the College of New Rochelle full-time and received my bachelor’s in three semesters. I’m proud to say I graduated Cum Laude. At New Rochelle, most of my courses were in psychology and social science.

I’m currently a student at the School of Labor and Urban Studies. I’m pursuing a Master’s degree in Urban Studies. The reason I chose SLU was to explore the possibilities of Urban communities and cities. I chose to study Urban Studies because I’m passionate about healthcare policies and the disparities among people living in underserved communities. I am certain that my degree will open doors for me in the field of healthcare management. This passion will help me gain a profound knowledge of these areas.
